Kathmandu: Nepal's former Maoist guerrillas joined an interim Government on Sunday, a move that takes them into the political mainstream as part of a peace deal that ended a decade-old revolt, officials said.
In his new multi-party cabinet, Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala appointed five nominees of the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist), they said.
The former Maoists will now control five ministries in the Government, which include the Information, Development and Forestry portfolios.
Nepal is to hold Constituent Assembly elections on June 20. The Maoists want monarchy abolished and a republican form of Government in place. But a final decision will be taken only after the new Parliament is elected.
The interim Parliament unanimously elected Koirala as the head of the new interim Government.
''A new chapter has begun in the history of Nepal. Let's all unite and complete this chapter,'' Koirala said in the interim Parliament.
