New Delhi: Even as this year’s Miss India Sarah Jane Dias repeats the winning reaction - a mixture of surprise, shock and awe, one wonders why the contest that pronounces India’s ‘beauty with brains’ has lost its sheen.
And for that matter, also known as women of substance, the last 10 Miss Indias and all seem to have either been lost in the Bollywood crowd or simply put, vanished into the oblivion.
Gul Panag, Lara Dutta, Celina Jaitely, Neha Dhupia and Tanushree Dutta chose to head towards Bollywood but clearly none of them are considered to be anywhere near being A-listers.
Not to mention Lara Dutta who also won the Miss Universe title in 2000, was spotted doing an item number at this year's Miss India event.
Only Priyanka Chopra, who was the first runner up in the same year when Lara was crowned and who later bagged Miss World 2000 crown, is today considered to have made a mark in the Mumbai film industry.
Other recent Miss World winners including Diana Hayden, Yukta Mookhey and also last year's Miss India Neha Kapur, have only a few television contracts or ramp appearances to write home about.
And going down memory lane, Lymaraina D'Souza, Nikita Anand and Amrita Thappar who have all been once crowned as Miss India, are today Miss-ing in action.
So now the question is are we choosing the right Miss Indias or are the winners simply not the women of substance that they are made out to be?
