Explosives found on Advani's yatra route in Tamil Nadu

Madurai: Explosives have been found under a bridge at Almapatti village near Tirumangalam, about 30 Kms from Madurai on Friday on the yatra route of senior BJP leader LK Advani. The explosives have been removed while investigations on the matter are still on.

Police sources said the five-ft pipe bomb, connected with wires was recovered under a bridge at Alampatti near Tirumangalam.

One person identified as Nehru was detained and was being questioned, they said.

Advani, who has the highest "Z-plus" category security, was on his way to Srivilliputhur via Tirumangalam, where he is scheduled to address a public meeting.

There will be a minor change in the yatra route. Advani will not take the bridge at Almapatti village and instead will take another road to Virudhunagar in Tamil Nadu.

The BJP has called for more security for Advani's yatra. "People who are fighting against corruption are been under attack directly or indirectly. We have told the Centre about the security and safety, and I request the centre to put advisory on giving protection," said BJP leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi.

Advani addressed a rally in Madurai on Friday during Tamil Nadu leg of his Jan Chetna Yatra against corruption.

Referring to the ouster of BS Yeddyurappa as Karnataka chief minister, the 84-year-old BJP leader said that the party was not soft on corruption. "Everyone knows that the moment Yeddyurappa was mentioned in Lokayukt report, he was asked to resign and he did resign," said Advani.

Talking on cash-for-votes, Advani said, "It is sad that whistle blowers are being punished instead of bribe givers".

Regarding the politics over the mercy pleas of death convicts, he said, "Whether it is Rajiv killers or attackers of Parliament, whatever court decisions are taken in such cases, they should not be meddled with for politics. Policy on terrorism should be consistent. There should be no clemency on political grounds."

Talking on nuclear plant issue, Advani said, "Nuclear plants near the sea shores should be reviewed thoroughly. The safety of the people is most important. The commercial interest of the government cannot be above the safety of the people."
