Ex-St Stephen's head helps cancer research

New Delhi: Former Principal of St Stephen's College, Dr Anil Wilson is battling end-stage pancreatic cancer.

For Dr Anil Wilson, this is probably the most diffucult period of his life. Principal of St Stephen's College for 16 years, Dr Wilson always joked that he has never been to a hospital in his life. Until last month when he was diagnosed with advanced pancreatic cancer.

His goal now is a single-point agenda.

Wilson says, “I wish to initiate greater research into this type of cancer. The reasons, objectives and offer myself as participant for any clinical trials.”

Pancreatic cancer affects older people aged between 60 and 80. The exact cause for this cancer is still not known but common risk factors are age, family history also increases one's risk by 2.5 times, smoking and alcohol, obesity and diabetes.

According to doctors in India, number of patients have increased by 5-10 times in the last 15-20 years. And yet when it comes to research, doctors plead helplessness.

Dr Sameer Kaul says, “Location of organ makes it difficult to monitor, hence lack of research and biopsy of pancreas are also difficult and inconclusive.”

Surgery is usually the best treatment but in most cases like Wilson's, it's ruled out as the cancer is already in an advanced stage.

In such a scenario, an initiative by Dr Wilson to offer himself for clinical trials of new drugs could be of immense help.

So while his well-wishers pray for his recovery, the man himself has these thoughts.

Wilson says, “I have realized how much suffering there is . We are mostly insulated from other's sufferings until we suffer ourselves. And the best way to ease yourself is to help others.
