Thrissur: Kerala government will distribute FM radio sets among the inmates of the Viyyur Central Jail in an attempt to bring relief from “the dreary life within the confines of a jail”.

“Authorities have given us FM radio sets. It gives us joy and keeps our mind peaceful. They have also provided coin-box telephone to contact our families,” says an inmate.

Home Minister, Kodiyeri Balakrishnan distributed FM radio sets to five inmates of Viyyur Central Jail on a pilot basis. And depending on the scheme's success, it would be extended to other prisons in the state.

The idea is to “calm the mind” of the prisoners. Inmates can buy FM radio sets using their prison wages. But earphones are compulsory, to avoid disturbing co-prisoners.

"Music helps the prisoner to relax, it also controls the blood pressure level,” says Jailer, K. Anil Kumar.

And for the first time in a prison in the state, the minister also inaugurated a coin-box telephone. The inmates can contact their families over phone which would help them cope with the travails of prison life.

To avoid misuse, the conversations will be monitored by officers. All these are done as a part of equipping the prisoners to be a part of society after their release.
