New Delhi: In what could be the first signs of a rebellion against Christian quota at the prestigious St Stephens College in Delhi, most members of the permanent faculty boycotted the special Assembly on the first day of the academic session on Tuesday.

Heads of various departments boycotted the special assembly to protest against a Christian quota in faculty recruitment.

The college has been divided on the issue ever since pro-tem administrator M S Frank decided to unofficially reserve seats for Christians in the college faculty.

Two Christian applicants have since been selected for ad hoc positions.

However, the college administration says the decision will only be reviewed after two-and-a-half months and until then the selected candidates would continue to teach.

There is criticism that the college too may soon join the long list of centres of excellence whose standards have been irreversibly lowered by those practising the politics of religion or ideology on campus.
