Fake encounter case: Chargesheet against 13 cops

New Delhi: Gujarat police has filed a chargesheet in the Sohrabuddin fake encounter case.

The 713-page chargesheet blames 13 policemen, including three IPS Officers - D G Vanzara, Raj Kumar Pandian and M N Dinesh.

The three were arrested on April 24. But importantly, it gives a clean chit to politicians, including Gujarat Minister of state for Home Amit Shah and senior BJP leader.

It was filed before a Metropolitan court in Ahmedabad ahead of the stipulated 90-day period for filing of chargesheet.

The police recorded the statements of 179 witnesses before filing the chargesheet.

The Gujarat CID began probe into the Sohrabuddin encounter case at the behest of Supreme Court after the victim's brother filed an application accusing the Gujarat police of staging the encounter and terming him as a Lashker-e-Toiba terrorist.

In the course of investigation CID arrested Vanzara, who headed the Sohrabuddin operation and two other senior IPS officers including one from Rajasthan.

Some other lower-ranked officials of the Gujarat Anti-Terrorist Squad and Rajasthan special task force were also arrested subsequently.

The CID has so far arrested nine policemen of the state Anti-Terrorist Squad and Rajasthan's Special Task Force.

These include senior IPS officer D G Vanzara who headed the operation and is the main accused in the case. He is also being accused of killing Sohrabuddin's wife Kausar Bi.
