New Delhi: The Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter killing case came up for hearing in the Supreme Court on Monday.
The Gujarat government told the Supreme Court that it will challenge the anticipatory bail given to one of the accused in the case, Superintendent of Police, N K Amin. Sources say Amin is likely to be suspended from service.
In a surprising revelation on Monday, it was found that the chargesheet filed in the case states the third person travelling with Sohrabuddin Sheikh and his wife Kausar Bi -- when they were picked up from the bus -- was someone called Kalimuddin, and not Tulsi Ram Prajapati, as was earlier reported.
Meanwhile, the Central Government sought to put the Modi government in Gujarat on the mat. It told the Supreme Court that the conduct of the state govenrment needed to be examined closely in this particular case.
Sheikh, an alleged extortionist who was active in Rajasthan, was killed in November 2005 on the city outskirts by a joint police team of the two states.
He was then branded by the police as a Lashkar-e-Toiba operative out on a mission to kill top politicians in the state.
The CID started the probe a few months after the victim's brother moved the Supreme Court in 2006, alleging Sheikh was killed in a fake police encounter.
