New Delhi: CNN-IBN special investigation has tracked the trail of fake Indian currency from Nepal into India.
The dangerous contraband crosses from Nepal into India from Birganj, the biggest town in Nepal's Terai region.
Birganj is across the border from Raxaul in Bihar and is the main transit point and the police in Birganj have confiscated hundreds of fake notes.
"We have confiscated more than Rs 4,00,000. People from both sides are involved," says Yogeshwar Rom Khami, Superintendent of Police, Birganj.
Corruption is rampant at the Raxaul-Birganj border crossing. On the Indian side unauthorised agents of the police collect bribes from almost every traveller.
They also tried to stop CNN-IBN from filming.
"No doubt unscrupulous persons are trying to bring hazard to our economy," says Shaukat Ali, Assistant Commissioner, Land Customs Post, Raxaul.
On the Nepal side of the border corruption is rampant and nobody stopped CNN-IBN from filming border officials extorting money from people entering Nepal.
So it is no surprise that thousands of fake currency couriers cross the Indo-Nepal border every month.
Smugglers are ready if the price is right.
CNN-IBN team watched a man with a red bag full of fake Indian currency notes casually cross the Nepal customs and immigration posts into India.
Hundreds of couriers surreptitiously bring bundles of fake currency into India everyday, neatly packed and hidden in small consignments of smuggled goods or personal belongings.
