Ujjain (Madhya Pradesh): The family of Sohrabuddin Shaikh, who was killed in a fake encounter in November 2005, in Ujjain's Jhirnya village in Madhya Pradesh is finally relieved that justice is being meted out to them.
They are celebrating the arrest of three IPS officers for the murder of Sohrabuddin, who was killed in an encounter faked by a joint operation of the Gujarat and Rajasthan Police.
Sohrabuddin’s wife Kausar is still missing and his family alleges that she, too, has been killed. But they are happy that the truth is finally out in the open.
“We are happy with the judgement. This is just the beginning, we will get justice,” said Sohrabuddin’s brother Naimuddin.
While the victim’s mother Jebunisa says that now she is sure that those who are behind the murder will be taken to task.
“I am satisfied with the court's judgement. I'm sure those responsible for killing my son and daughter-in-law will be punished,” Jebunisa said.
The Gujarat Anti-Terrorist Squad had claimed Sohrabuddin was a Lashkar-e-Toiba operative who was planning to kill Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi.
In 1994, in one of its biggest arms haul, the Madhya Pradesh Police acting on an Intelligence Bureau tip-off recovered more than 28 AK-56 rifles from a well near Sohrabuddin’s house. After which he was arrested by the CBI, but later exonerated due to lack of evidence.
Sohrabuddin’s is not the only such case. Tulsi Prajapati, a resident of Ujjain and a close associate of Sohrabuddin was also killed in an encounter.
The police say Prajapati, a proclaimed offender, was killed while allegedly fleeing Rajasthan Police's custody when he was being taken from Ahmedabad to Udaipur.
“My son was killed by the police,” Tulsi’s mother Narmada Prajapati said, adding that as evidence she has a letter, which Prajapati wrote from a jail in Ahmedabad.
