Fake passport scam net widens

New Delhi/Jalandhar: The Punjab police on Tuesday arrested a travel agent and recovered 34 fake passports reportedly linked to MP Babubhai Katara's detention last week.

Travel agent Harbhajan Singh was arrested after a tip off provided by Paramjeet Kaur - the woman Katara was trying to 'smuggle' abroad.

“We are questioning the accused and are trying to ascertain who are the other people involved in this wide fake passport making network," says Kapurthala Police DSP Balbir Singh.

The Delhi Police crime branch is now probing into the possibility of a direct link between this arrest and the Katara case.

Meanwhile, the four other MPs under the fake passport scanner failed to turn up at the crime branch, even after a notice ordering them to assist in the investigations.

While MPs Md Tahir Khan and Ashok Rawat have responded to the crime branch notice stating they are busy with UP elections, Ramswarup Koli has stated he is busy in his hometown.

The only MP who has still not responded is Mitrasen Yadav.

The other accused Sunderlal Yadav believed to be the conduit between Paramjit Kaur and Katara, was on Tuesday remanded to another two days in police custody.

The police also told the court that Yadav had allegedly earned Rs 15-20 lakh in the scam so far. Ali, Nijhawan and Navin are three other travel agents Yadav named during investigations.
