New Delhi: Dealers of a private mobile company in Jammu have been arrested after hundreds of fake election I cards were recovered from them.
Police say they used to issue SIM cards with these fake ids.
But the overriding concern is that the racket may have been used by militants.
The fraud is not limited to numbers on photos alone. Several fake seals of gazetted officers have also been seized.
Police say these were used to issue SIM cards without proper verification.
It’s a racket increasingly being utilised by militants
SSP of Crime Branch, J P Singh said, “It is dangerous because electronic intelligence and technical intelligence play an important role in anti militancy operations and this reckless issue of cards does help the militant groups in subversive activities.”
In 2006, Indian SIM cards were seized from Pakistani terrorists inside the highly protected Kot Bhalwal Jail in Jammu.
A year later, SIM cards obtained on fake Ids of security personnel were recovered from a blast site in Baramulla.
Only a month ago, a Lashkar-e-Toeba operative was arrested in Poonch with Indian and Pakistani SIMs.
Police say illegally acquired SIM cards were used even during the terror attack in Mumbai in November 2008.
“Mumbai attacks when militants came in they called from Indian SIMs. The companies must corporate responsibility which they are not admitting to right now,” said J P Singh.
Reliance replied on the issue assuring enquiry into the incident.
“We have launched our own internal investigation and will ensure compliance of rules by its dealers,” said their statement.
Three Reliance mobile dealers from whom the fake Ids were recovered are now in police custody. The crime branch has also issued an advisory to all cellphone operators.
