New Delhi: Onam is never quite complete without the traditional Onam Sadhya - the grand feast at noon prepared mostly by female members of the family.
But these days more and more families are shutting down their kitchens on Onam and are opting for an easier alternative - the fast food Sadhya.
“We use to cook Onam feast in our houses only. But this year we prefer to buy it from professional caterers as this is the only vacation time when we can be away from the hectic schedules of daily life and spend more time with our family,” says a housewife, Indira Devi.
But while Indira takes her day off, the men will be working hard to make sure her family does not miss the Onam Sadhya.
The parcels contain everything a traditional Sadhya has - dal, sambar, olan, erissery and even the delicious dessert payasam. And all of this come for just Rs 80 per leaf.
“Many of the families are depending on us for the Onam Sadhya. This year we have bookings for close to 40,000 people all in parcels which is a huge increase compared to last year,” says a professional caterer Kannan Swamy.
This time the rates are a bit high because of the general price rise but many think it is still a good bargain.
