Jharia: At least 54 miners were feared dead after remaining trapped underground for 24-hours after an explosion in Jharia coal mine took place in Jharkhand.

Most of these miners were from Nagda village in Jharkhand, which is one of the most backward, and poverty stricken area of the state.

While, the families of these miners mourn their deaths, the worst hit are the ones who have lost their only bread earners. Some of the families are still waiting for news of their loved ones.

"My son is gone. I have lost him forever," said Sukhda Devi, the mother of a trapped miner who was feared dead in the Jharia mine.

"I've lost my nephew. His mother's a widow. There is no one to look after her now," Shishupal Mehtu relative of a trapped miner said.

Gita Devi is still waiting for her husband to come back even though she has been told that he could be dead. "I waited for my husband all night before I got the news," she said.

Yet another mine tragedy, loss of human life and compensation announced, it’s an unending tale. However, the question that the mineworkers are asking is why there are no safety measures available to these hazardous mines.

They say that officials perhaps do not realise that any amount of money cannot be substitute for a loss of life.
