New Delhi: In Bhopal, members of the Ahirwar community, formerly discriminated against as untouchables, are practicing their own form of intolerance. They have expelled an entire family from their fold because their daughter dared to walk out on her abusive husband.
Twenty five-year-old Usha, her six-month-old daughter Shivani and her parents are outcasts in the Ahirwar community, as the community has banned them. This rejection is because Usha has refused to stay with her husband as he allegedly tortured her for dowry.
"I won't go to my husband at any cost. He tortures me and now the community has defamed my father. I want justice,” says Usha.
The Navyuvak Ahirwar Samaj Sudhar Sangh has directed all community members to stay away from them or else face punishment. The Sangh is supported by the BJP and its president Moti Lal Thakre enjoys the saffron party's backing as well. The Sangh has now demanded ten thousand rupees from Usha's family so that they can come back into the community fold.
"We have just distributed a few pamphlets. The decision was taken to reform the society and the family. And it is just a threat,” says Moti Lal Thakre, President, Navyuvak Ahirwar Samaj Sudhar Sangh.
Usha's family being Ahirwars are already suffering from the stigma of untouchability and now even within the community they are outcasts.
