Mysore: In the Defence Food Research Lab (DFRL), defence scientist Sanjeev Kumar demonstrates the power of a yet to be patented chemical composition that self-heats food, which actually looks like a small carton of ready-to-eat food.
“To initiate the process, we have to allow the two chemicals to come in contact by piercing a small hole in the pouch,” says Kumar.
And voila! Once the chemical reaction starts, the steaming hot ready-to-eat food is ready to be eaten. However, you may rather want to put it back in the carton and eat it 15 minutes later.
The self-heating technology developed by the Defence Food Research Lab primarily for soldiers in Jammu and Kashmir, is now the last phase of trials.
However, director of DFRL, A S Bawa says, “Large scale trials are being conducted now. We have sent samples and once successful, it will be introduced.”
It is not only the army jawans who benefit from the packs. Since the technology will be available in the market before next winter, it may help a busy BPO employee wanting hot food after getting home at some unearthly hour.
And there is also more winter food in the offing. Scientists at the DFRL have also come up with 'munch' appetisers that use regular ingredients in just the right mix to give you a healthy appetite.
“It has been made for jawans in the high altitude. They have less appetite due low oxygen there,” says Bawa.
The munches certainly keep them from getting weak, and it will be available in the market in a few months.
