New Delhi: Farmers in Nashik district in Maharashtra have gone on protest against the central government's decision to ban export of onions.
Farmers have stopped selling their produce at Lasalgaon and Pimpalgaon after the traders cut prices by Rs 500 per quintal due to ban on exports.
The ban was imposed to increase the stock of onions in the domestic market and check price rise. Onion prices have touched Rs 30 a kg in many markets of the country.
The wholesale onion prices stood at Rs 15-20 per kilo, while retail prices were between Rs 18 to Rs 25 per kilo.
Vilas Bhujbal, a wholesale onion trader, said that despite the suspension of exports, the prices will take sometime to come down as they were already in short supply.
Currently no onions were coming from Karnataka and Gujarat, he said. Pune, before the onion shortage, used to receive 100-125 trucks of onions but the supply has dwindled to only 30-40 trucks since the last few months.
