Howrah: The Congress, an ally of the Mamata Banerjee government in West Bengal, on Tuesday demanded that the state government should pay compensation to the families of farmers who had committed suicide.

"The state government should not only pay compensation to the families of farmers who committed suicide, but should also take steps to prevent such recurrences," WBPCC president Pradip Bhattacharya said.

"It is the duty of the state government to prevent recurrence of farmers suicide," Bhattacharya said after visiting the family members of Sheikh Mushtaq, a farmer at Ballukudi village in Howrah district who allegedly committed suicide on Sunday.

Bhattacharya also announced that the WBPCC would take care of the education of Sheikh Mushtaq's only daughter. Earlier in the day, Chief Minister Mamata had ruled out a probe by a team of MLAs belonging to all political parties into reports of farmers' deaths in West Bengal, terming them as "incorrect".

Banerjee's statement came a day after Governor MK Narayanan said such incidents (farmers suicide) were "unfortunately" taking place in the state.
