New Delhi: Delhi's warring fashion camps, Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) and Fashion Foundation of India (FFI), have finally struck a truce and agreed upon just one fashion week per season as against two. And from now government backed Fashion Design Promotion Council (FDPC) headed by Vijay Singh will be at the helm of affairs.
"The objective is to overgrow the industry by creating infrastructure, by promoting young talent and by taking the brand India fashion international,” said Singh.
According to the new plan, the Delhi Fashion Week and FFI will be discontinued. Meanwhile, FDCI members will have to become members of the FDPC to participate in forthcoming fashion weeks. So does that make FDCI redundant now?
"All designers will become a part of FDPC and they would be given a chance to show case their talent in upcoming fashion weeks,” said Singh.
The FDPC body will have a governing council of 15 members. Designers Tarun Tahiliani, Rohit Bal and JJ Valaya are some names proposed for this council.
While Sumeet Nair who headed the FFI has been roped in to organise the event, FDCI's top man Sunil Sethi is expected to be FDPC's director general.
"Prodigy Fashion is a company which has been engaged by FDPC so we are away from it and they if there is again politics - which I hope there isn't - then we will be away from it," said Nair.
However, questions about FDPC being the answer to the fashion frat's woes still remain unanswered.
"Are we looking at corporatisation of the industry? Or will there be certain subsidies coming in from the government? And the Textile Ministry supporting Indian handicrafts?" demands designer Nikihl Mehra.
