Srinagar: It is fasting and feasting time in Kashmir and a blend of culture, tradition and faith goes to make the month of Ramzan unique and interesting.

At 3:00 AM (IST) in the some would say it obviously not the best time for upbeat jungles. But Sher Khan knows that he is doing the people in Srinagar a favour, waking them up in time for their last meal before their daytime Ramzan fast begins.

“Ramzan is a special month for Muslims. We are taking sehri this time and from now onwards we will be observing fast,” says a resident, Mohammed Latiff.

The traditional mutton and chicken dishes are big hits this time of the year.

As dawn breaks, preparations begin for the iftari, the breaking of the fast in the evening.

Vegetables are haggled over, spices carefully chosen, and meat examined for freshness. Nothing, after all, is too good for iftari.

Ramzan is also full house time for mosques in Srinagar, which are thronged by devotees seeking atonement for their sins.

Some, though, have more conventional prayers.

“We pray during this month for our parents, folks and country. We pray for peace to prosper in Kashmir,” says a resident, Feroz Ahmed.

As the sun sets, the streets bustle with people out for a quick iftari. A host of delicacies awaits the rozdaars, those who have fasted all day. And out come the dates, biryani, pickles, custard kheer, which are of course all good.
