Fast lane to price rise: Truckers to strike from July 2

Mumbai: With close to 48 lakh commercial trucks, lorries and trailers planning to stay off the road indefinitely to protest against unreasonable toll collections, service tax flaws besides other things, prices of perishable goods are likely to go up.

"We're going on a strike from July 2 to protest against various things. Everything was agreed upon in an agreement in 2004 but nothing been followed. Also, there are toll charges on so many roads. The cost of building the road has long been recovered but the taxes haven’t been stopped. Also, duties and taxes should be done away with,” says Mahender Arya of the Transport association.

With inflation at an all time high of 11.42 per cent, increasing outgoings on bank loan payments have already stretched many a household budget. This latest possibility of a further scarcity of household commodities is worrying many.

“It's already so difficult and this can only be called terrible. Everyone's going to buy and hoard causing another price hike. How much can one buy and keep?” asks Mumbai-based homemaker Priti Sukhthankar.

But the transport association is unrelenting. “This is the last resort for us,” says VP, Bombay Goods Transport Association, Agrawal Girish.

For the consumers battling escalating prices and increasing interest rate burdens, this would just be another burden. Will the Government be able to resolve this stand-off?
