Kolkata: A Kolkata fast-track on Tuesday sentenced Dipak Bhattacharyya for seven years in jail and Rs 2,000 fine for killing his son after he lost a table tennis match.
Dipak killed his 16-year-old son Biswadip Bhattacharyya in January 2007 for failing to win a match.
Biswadip was clubbed to death with a table tennis bat his father had gifted him.
"Sentence is seven-year imprisonment, Rs 2,000 fine or three months jail," said his lawyer Arup Ghosh.
Dipak's wife Papiya was among the 18 witnesses in court demanding life imprisonment for him. Both she and her daughter Neha fear he would torture them once he comes back from jail.
"Seven years will pass in an instant. He will come out of jail and torture us," feared Papiya.
Daughter Neha Bhattacharya said," I wanted him to get life imprisonment."
Dipak fell ill inside the court when the verdict was announced. He will now go for an appeal in a higher court.
