New Delhi: With just a week to go for assembly polls to be held in Haryana, a close look shows that the candidates in fray provide a study in contrasts.
While there are some crorepati candidates who seek to be elected to office, there are also those who own just a flock of goats.
There are also some politicians who chose to capitalise on their sons' names, and then there are those who want to have nothing to do with their not so illustrious sons' names.
A debutante in politics, Yograj Singh is a candidate for the Indian National Lok Dal.
His claim to fame so far though, is that he is the father of the accomplished Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh. A first-time contestant for elections seeking to garner votes from the Panchkula Assembly seat in Haryana, Yograj Singh makes it a point to drop his famous son's name at every given opportunity.
"Just as people say, there goes Yuvraj Singh's father now, people will one day also say that there goes a man who is a politician that everyone should emulate," said Yograj Singh to CNN-IBN.
Yuvraj is yet to turn up and campaign for his father but that doesn't stop Yograj from setting a lot of conditions to his celebrity son before he visits.
"I tell him (Yuvraj Singh) that he is welcome to come campaign but that has to be without any fanfare. Meet everyone and then see for yourself how much sadness is there in the world," said Singh.
If that was one dad who loves to bask in his son's glory, there is another who tries desperately to hide his sons identity. Venod Sharma, the father of the accused in the Jessica Lal murder case, Manu Sharma finds the case haunting him long after he stepped down as minister. Sharma, who is contesting from Ambala, finds it prudent not to react when his rivals rake up his son's name. He totally side-steps the mere mention of Manu Sharma who has also been convicted in the Jessica Lal murder case.
"I don't make any personal attacks on anyone. Whatsoever may be a person's thinking, they can only do that much. I have nothing to say on that," said Sharma.
