FCI scam: CBI raids in four states

CNN-IBN

New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday conducted raids across four states in connection with the rice procurement scam involving Food Corporation of India (FCI) officials.

CBI sleuths conducted raids at 11 places in Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Andhra Pradesh in the alleged procurement of substandard rice for the people in the states.

A CBI spokesperson said the scam is expected to be worth Rs 700 crore and some IAS officers deputed in the FCI are under the CBI scanner.

Among those whose residential premises were raided included an IAS and Senior Regional Manager K Shiv Prasad and District Managers M S Sarang, Jagmohan Verma and Rakesh Ranjan. Other officials were from the Assistant Managers (Quality Control) and Technical Assistant levels.

They allegedly connived with rice mill owners and supplied substandard rice to the country's central pool.

Last year, when the FCI officials detected that some of its officials were procuring sub-standard rice for the price of Grade 'A' rice, it filed cases against corrupt FCI officials under the Prevention of Corruption Act.

It then identified 30 centres which were involved in the scam and asked the CBI to investigate.

Meanwhile, CBI is investigating a nexus between rice millers, FCI officers, politicians and IAS officers.
