New Delhi: BJP president Nitin Gadkari on Wednesday said that his party was not going to support Manmohan Singh government on FDI in multi-brand retail.
The BJP, whose vote base comprises small traders, will not compromise, says Gadkari.
"Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee discussed the issue with me when he invited me for lunch just a day before the session was to begin. I welcome and appreciate that gesture. But I had told him that FDI in retail is one issue where BJP would not be able to support the government, he said.
"Our opposition is primarily because it will create problems for small traders and lead un-employment. There are some advantages and some dis-advantages of FDI in retail. But dis-advantages far outweigh the advantages," he added.
On Parliament impasse and no-confidence motion, he said, "People have elected this government for 5 years. We do not want to destabilise it. This government is in trouble because of its own attitude. If the govt falls, it will be because of its own decisions. We do not want to become a party to that. We are a responsible opposition. Government should concede debate on FDI in retail under stipulated rules."
