The Lok Sabha is set to debate FDI in retail on Tuesday and will vote on the issue on Wednesday. The Rajya Sabha will debate FDI on Thursday and Friday. While the government seems to have the numbers in the Lok Sabha, in the Rajya Sabha, FDI may see a Lokpal-like fate.
The numbers:
Lok Sabha:
The total strength of the Lok Sabha is 544 and the half way mark is 272
Vote on FDI
For
Congress(206) + DMK(18) + OTH(30) + RJD(4) + JDS(3) = 261
Against
NDA(152) + LEFT(24)+ TMC(19) + AIADMK (9) + BJD (14) = 218
Abstain
SP(22) + BSP(21) = 43
After the abstentions, the total strength comes down to 501 and the half-way mark comes down to 251
Rajya Sabha:
House strength - 244
Half-way - 122
For FDI
UPA 90 + RJD 2 + NOM 10 = 102
UPA short of 20
Against FDI
NDA (66) + LEFT (14) + TMC (9) + ADMK 7 + BJD 5 = 101
Opposition short of 21
UPA outside support
BSP (15) + SP (9) = 24
If this group votes for FDI, the FOR FDI number goes up to 126
IF this group votes against FDI, the AGAINST FDI number goes up to 125
But if this group abstains
House strength - 220
Half-way 110
FOR FDI = 102 (SHORT OF 8)
AGAINST FDI = 101 (SHORT OF 7)
