Fear factor grips Delhi suburbs

Noida: Satellite towns are all about living far from the madding crowd but how safe is one in such townships? Noida residents are doing a rethink and security is on top of their minds after Adobe India CEO Naresh Gupta’s son was kidnapped from outside his house in Noida on Monday morning.

Two years back, when Laxmi Khari and her family decided to move base from the United Kingdom to India their preferred destination was Noida.

"Noida is green and is better planned. It is less crowded as compared to Delhi. So, it was the best option then," a housewife, Laxmi Khari says.

But during the last two years Laxmi found that the satellite township was not exactly her dream city. "The law and order situation is pathetic. We heard about murders and kidnapping and there is more corruption in the UP police," Laxmi says.

Laxmi isn't the only one complaining. Entrepreneur Neeta Bhasin and her family are also discovering the perils of living in a satellite township.

"More security is required and I don’t know how it is being reciprocated by the government. In the neighbourhood also there is not much concern about security," Neeta's husband and businessman, Vipin Bhasin says.

The Bhasins believe that there is more to the situation than just the lapses in the law and order system. And they don't just complain, they even recommend that it is important to be nosy and question strangers in the neighbourhood.

"People taunt me that I'm nosy but I don't feel bad because that is the only way to keep track of strangers. We are always alert because tomorrow such incidents could happen to us," Neeta says.

Residents of Noida feel that there should be more to the suburbs than the trappings of high-rises and wide roads and on top of their list right now is a state-of-the-art policing system, 24/7.
