Yavatmal (maharashtra): Two-year-old Gaushiya Ibrahim has had it tough. Her troubles started when her parents died and her grandmother abandoned her at Vasantrao Naik Hospital in Yavatmal, fearing the child had AIDS.
“The grandmother came and told us that the father of the girl had acquired AIDS and both her parents died of it. We have conducted tests on the child and so far the report is negative,” said a doctor, Milind Kamble.
Gaushiya has been at the hospital for a week. A victim of malnutrition, she is now being looked after by the hospital staff.
“We have been urging police to take appropriate action in the case, but they haven’t done anything of the sort yet,” says Kamble.
The incident also brings to light the lack of public awareness about AIDS.
“Not just in villages, misconception about AIDS is very common in cities as well. They think sharing a room, toilet and bed sheets spreads AIDS,” says Counsellor, Rural AIDS Awareness Sheetal Ujade.
