New Delhi: Sports Minister MS Gill on Monday congratulated Punjab for winning the Santosh Trophy and patted runners-up Services as well, hoping they would do better next time.

"I congratulate Punjab for lifting the title but Services too fought well and I hope they would do better next time," Gill told PTI.

The minister also congratulated the organisers and the people of Srinagar for making it a success.

"Personally, I wanted to be in Srinagar for the final but due to inclement weather here, I could not go," Gill said.

Punjab beat Services 1-0 to defend their national championship title.

Defending champions Punjab have beaten Services 1-0 for their 2nd consecutive Santosh Trophy win.

Both teams played attacking football in Srinagar and it was a golden opportunity for Services who were playing in a Santosh trophy final after 39 years but a defensive lapse and a needless handball in the 50th minute gave Punjab a penalty and that was all they needed.

Punjab's Jaspal Singh smashed the ball in and that's how it ended. Punjab won their second consecutive Santosh Trophy a great boost for football in the state.
