New Delhi: Roger Federer would have wanted an easier match on his 26th birthday. But Croatian Ivo Karlovic made the World No. 1 work hard for every point, taking the first set to a tiebreak.
But the Swiss star turned it on at the right time to take it 7-2. The second set also went to a tiebreak and the birthday boy gave himself the perfect present, winning the set and with it, the match.
Second seed Rafael Nadal was up against Marat Safin in a mouth-watering match-up.
Nadal served for the first set but the Russian refused to succumb to the Spaniard, taking it to a tiebreak. But the three-time French Open champion found his range when it was needed to take the set 7-4.
The second set was a no contest as Nadal sailed through without dropping a single game to enter the third round.
In another match, fifth-seeded Andy Roddick got past Frenchman Arnaud Clement 6-1, 7-6. If he beats Marcos Baghdatis in the next round, Roddick will pick up the 400th victory of his career.
