Los Angeles: A pre-cursor to the Grammy's, the American Music Awards were announced on Sunday in Los Angeles and like every year, it was not just about awards but about fashion, high-profile designers, about red carpet live performances and much excitement.

The exhilaration was felt by almost all the music mascots attending the awards.

"I am feeling pretty excited just to be here," says Canadian singer Avril Lavigne, who has won about six awards in the past month and a half.

Chris Daughtry may not have won American Idol, but his band, Daughtry, earned three nominations, winning the award for Favourite Pop-Rock album.

However, the spotlight was on Carrie Underwood who won three American Music Awards, including the best country singer and Justin Timberlake who won the Best Male Pop-Rock Artiste and Best Soul/R&B Album award for FutureSex/LoveSounds.

"This is awesome, thank you," said Timberlake from Australia, via satellite link. "The requirements for this award are that you have to be a male and an artist and luckily I fulfill both so, I am qualified," he quipped. "I can't believe that I won this award," he added.

The best female Soul and R&B Artist award was taken away by Rihanna, who humbly accepted her award.

She said, "Soul/R&B was one category I definitely did not expect to be nominated for, much less win."

Beyonce Knowles won the Best International Artiste award.

"I don't take it for granted. I am so grateful," said Beyonce, modestly.

Fergie was crowned the Favourite Pop-Rock Female Artist and vented her disbelief.

"Will I am! Can you believe it!" gushed the vibrant Black-Eyed Peas singer to tumultuous applause.

The enthralling event was much more than just an awards night for many guests. "Awards aren't the best thing about the AMAs," said Natasha Bedingfield. The best thing about these events is that you meet everyone that you know or that you ever heard of and you bump into them. It's great."
