New Delhi: A firebrand leader who went to jail for opposing the emergency, 3 decades on NDA’s former defence minister George Fernandes is a shadow of his former self, suffering from Alzheimers and Parkinsons disease.
His estranged family is now alleging that his party colleagues are trying to appropriate Fernandes' assets for themselves. Fernandes's wife and son have now written to the Home Ministry and Delhi police to ensure that he gets more security.
Fernandes’ son Sean Fernandes said, “My father has a certain amount of assets and we just want to make sure that all his funds are used for his health and not for any other cause.”
Fernandes and his wife separated 26 years ago. His son Sean now says Janta Dal United (JDU) party workers' access to Fernandes' residence must be restricted. He has even pointed fingers at Fernandes close associate Jaya Jaitley, who was accused in the Tehelka and Barak Missile scams.
“We don’t want our house to be used for any other activity and that’s why we want to restrict the entry of people into the house and that includes Jaya Jaitly, said Sean.
The family also says that in March 2009, a top member of JDU forcefully made Fernandes hand over power of attorney over his finances to him. The document has now been revoked in consultation with Mr Fernandes himself.
