New Delhi/Bangalore/Mumbai: Diwali and Eid are round the corner and the police is on the edge with security is at its highest levels across the country.

On October 29, 2005, two days before Diwali, five bomb blasts rocked the Capital. A year has gone by but Sarojini Nagar Market, one of the worst affected, is on high alert and is taking all possible precautions.

In spite of public alerts, policemen are not taking it easy. Suspicious items and even unmanned vehicles are being checked. In addition to the routine checks, six newly installed close circuit television cameras are also being used to monitor the situation.

"We have contacted organisers and shop owners and are looking forward to working better with their cooperation,” Additional CP PHQ, Deepender Pathak said.

The scene is similar in Mumbai as well. While there are few uniformed men in sight, surveillance is being maintained by police in plain clothes.

The Mumbai Police has been on a state of high alert since the July 11 serial blasts and with the festive season, security has been stepped up in all parts of the city.

It's not only the common man on the street who's being provided extra security. With the festive season and the upcoming by-elections VIP security is also being heightened but Bangalore apparently is not all that worried.

At Bangalore’s Brigade Road there is no visible security present despite the claims of the DGP of the extra battalions.

"Deployment takes time, it’s not like you switch on a button and everything happens. I have told the CP and forces will be deployed soon,” DGP, Karnataka, BS Sial said.

Every year it’s the same story, there is a festival and security forces go on high alert. As soon as everything's over, security takes a back seat. With the constant threats the need of the hour is for agencies to perpetually be on their toes.
