Hyderabad: The festive season has begun in south India with month of Shravan (monsoon).

Friday saw the first in the line of many festivals with married women celebrating Varalakshmi Vrata – a fast they observe to seek blessings from Goddess Lakshmi.

The festival is celebrated in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra.

"On Varalakshmi day, we get up early in the morning and got to the temple. On the same day, we cook variety of rice and call all married women for the celebrations,” says a devotee Sandhya.

The festival is rooted in the legend that Goddess Lakshmi shared the secret of prosperity with a poor Brahmin woman, who pleased her by performing fast and prayers.

"Once we get the blessings of the deity, she is known to shower boons on us, especially on married ladies and newly married couples,” says a homemaker Uma.
