Mumbai: “I am an addict and I am one of you. A drug addict is not a curse to the society,” says Chetan Joshi, a former drug addict who has seen the dark side of drug addiction.
Chetan was 15 years old when he got addicted to drugs, but today, at 22, after undergoing rehabilitation he sees the futility of embracing the demon called drugs.
“Drugs are an illusion. The dark side of this coin is very dark — you will be rejected by the society,” Chetan says.
But everything is not lost. There is always a ray of hope for those who want to fight off their addiction.
Rehabilitation centres across the country not only help teenagers get rid of their drug addiction but also play a pivotal role in getting their lives back on the track.
These centres tackle the problem of drug addiction in different ways, one such approach employs the following:
- Step 1: Psycho-spiritual methods to strengthen spiritual foundation
Experts believe teenagers exposed to narcotic drugs at an early age should be counselled and not imprisoned.
“Police have done their job but this won't act as a deterrent, as what they require is counselling and a change in cognition and lifestyle,” Ashit, a counseller at a Mumbai drug rehabilitation centre, says.
Chetan, too, believes that imprisonment is not the solution “because once they are out they would want to do it again.”
