Mumbai: Mumbai's Mira Road area over the years has earned the reputation of being a hub for terror conspirators.

However, the residents of the area are now determined to get rid of the dubious distinction.

“We have circulated circulars in the area asking people to be alert of any suspicious activities in their neighbourhood,” says Real Estate Agent, Nayanagar, Ahmed Choughale.

“Our teams roam around Nayanagar looking for suspicious people,” says social worker, Mohd Ghulam.

Meanwhile, the residents of Mira Road's Nayanagar have launched a 'clean-up' drive to root out terror conspiracies being hatched in their area.

At least seven alleged terror conspirators have been traced to Mira Road in the past, the latest of them being alleged mastermind of Ahmedabad blasts Tauqir Qureshi. However, the residents of the area are making efforts to wipe off the infamy through self-policing.

Some of the measures taken include, maintaining detailed records of residents. The records of visiting relatives in the area are also maintained. Enquiries are made into missing residents of the area.

The policing does not end here. Youngsters also keep a constant vigil on activities in their societies.

To tackle organisations that bring a bad name to Islam, the help of local Masjids and religious scholars has also been enlisted in this vigilance drive.

“Whatever some people are doing, is against Islam,” says Masjid Imam, Maulana Mansoor Ahmad.

Meanwhile, the police who is also under pressure to tide over the terror menace, the police have also welcomed the idea of citizen-patrollers.

“We welcome the step but just that they should not take it to the extreme,” says ADG Law and Order, Maharashtra, Sanjeev Dayal.

However, if the Mira Road experience works, other neighbourhoods too can take cue from the model of self-policing to tackle terror and feel less insecure.
