Final SC verdict on Maya's park next week

New Delhi: It's a park that has been the subject of much controversy. Public money worth crores have already been spent on the Ambedkar Park being constructed by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati in Noida. The Park is now under the scanner for violating environmental laws.

Last month, the Central Empowered Committee had conducted a site inspection of the park on the basis of a petition filed by local residents and environmentalists.

Naturalist, Delhi Bird Club, Anand Arya says, "The loss of greenery as well as the amount of light pollution that it will cause will have an enormous impact on birds."

The Park is being constructed on the edge of the Okhla Bird Sanctuary and it is alleged that 6000 trees were cut down to make space for the park.

The Central Empowered Committee appointed by the Supreme Court to look into issues related to violation of forest laws has now recommended the following:

  • While the Park is not a forest and therefore did not need any forest clearance
  • It still needs environment clearance for any construction activity

Till the clearance is sought by the state government, all construction activity must stop on the park. The case will come up for hearing next week in Supreme Court for the final verdict.

It now remains to be seen whether the highest court of the land will accept the recommendation of its committee.
