Book Review: 'Simians of South Block...'

Here's an unusual tale by children's author Ranjit Lall — one that should shake up the corridors of power in the Capital.

There are a hundred terrible monkeys trying to take over a national park by holding some piglets hostage — that's the story of The Simians of South Block and the Yumyum Piglets.

A plan has been hatched by Delhi's powerful politicians to rid South Block of the mighty Gutka the Gross and his Horde of One Hundred most terrifying monkeys. They are to be translocated to the Shikhargunj National park to create panic.

At Shikhargunj, a leadership crisis has arisen. Sher Bahadur, the sole tiger of the forest has taken sanyas and a battle for succession has cropped up. Top contenders are Dhoomdham — a clumsy, drooling leopard who just wants to eat the piglets, Veer Bahadur — a horrible cunning jackal who also wants to eat the piglets, and handbag Gucci — the designer crocodile who also to eat the piglets.

Now Dhoomdham must bring the head of the daughter of the forest officer to stake his claim as the top predator of the park.

But then the monkeys arrive and all hell breaks loose. Oh and Gucci the crocodile eats everything that falls in the river. A dangerous hostage crisis develops as some of the Yum Yum piglets are held hostage.

You'll have to read The Simians of South Block and the Yumyum Piglets for more of the audacious plan to free the hostages.

The book is about this bunch of really stupid but somehow endearing animals trying their best to save their jungle.

It's strongly recommended for everyone who loves animals.
