Click to play videoAhmedabad: Actor-turned-filmmaker Nandita Das' directorial debut Firaaq, scheduled for a nationwide release on Friday, will reportedly not be screened in Gujarat's multiplexes.
The state's multiplex owners association cited a profit sharing issue with the distributor as the main reason for not going ahead with the film's release.
"It’s not clear yet. We have not finalised profit sharing with the distributor. We have to figure out the percentage,” President, All Gujarat Multiplex Association, Manubhai Patel said.
The association was also quick to add that Firaaq is reportedly based on the post-Godhra riots in Gujarat, and so they were wary of disturbing the communal harmony in the state by screening the film.
“We don't know what is in the movie. One thing is certain, if it is against the communal harmony of the state, then we will not run the movie,” General Manager, Wide Angle Multiplex, Neeraj Ahuja said.
While Manubhai Patel said, “If this film is based on the same theme as Parzania then I feel that such a movie should not be released."
Ironically Firaaq has been boycotted without any members of the multiplex association having watched the film.
“Has Mr Modi or anybody in his cabinet seen the film? This film is neither about Godhra nor is it about the riots. So I don’t see anyone feeling threatened by it,” Nandita Das said.
"In my knowledge, it is releasing all over Gujarat. All single-screen cinemas are screening it and about 14 cinemas in Ahmedabad are showing the movie.
"There is no problem. Nobody has any problem with it. Nobody has told me that the theme of the movie is a problem. These are rumours. The movie is being released." says Representative, Aum Exhibitors, Jayendra Raval.
According to reports, the boycott comes from the All Gujarat Multiplex Association independent of the state government.
