Mumbai: After Nandita Das' directorial debut Firaaq receiving critical acclaim, the actor-filmmaker has invited her friend and writer Deepak Chopra for a special screening of the film in Mumbai.
"I'd been to Gujarat after the incident and after violence lot of things linger be it anger, or pain we have seen it in Mumbai. We have seen it everywhere over the time. For me it was a cathartic experience to show it through a film ," said Nandita.
That is what inspired Nandita to pick a subject like the Gujarat genocide of 2002 to mark her debut as a director. Eager to get a response from her audience , she invited good friend and spiritual writer Deepak Chopra for a screening of the film in Mumbai.
She also had an interactive question answer session with viewers who were part of this special screening on Tuesday.
"What I intended to do is to trigger a certain dialogue because it's good for individuals and society. One can't give you spoon feeding films, it's not a prescribed film nor is it a violent film. I'm glad people had questions," she said.
"Even though it's an disturbing film to an extent it's about healing. Unless we are honest with ourselves and respond to questions raised within we will not change our conversation. It will not change, it will always remain us verses them, right verses wrong and Hindu verses Muslim," said Deepak Chopra.
And while most of the cast including Tisca Chopra , Dipti Naval and Sahana Goswami showed up to lend their support to the film, they were all praises for the lady director.
"As a director she is so keen on details and likes to go on to the depth of every character. I have worked with her for only three days but I was amazed at the way she tackled all the characters ," said Deepti Naval.
"Even before I was narrated the script when I came to know that Nandita wants me in her film I was delighted, I have admired her work so when she wanted me to play a part in her debut I was thrilled," said Shahana Goswami.
While Firaaq has received the best box office opening amongst all the new releases last week, the team will be hoping that such word of mouth publicity will also add to numbers in the theatres.
