New Delhi: The 60 people who were feared trapped inside a shopping mall in Kanpur city after a fire broke out in a mall have been rescued.
The mall - City Centre - is the oldest mall in Uttar Pradesh and is located in the congested Mall Road area. Several fire tenders were rushed to the spot to douse the blaze and prevent casualties.
The trapped people were brought down by ladders of the fire department, Kanpur District Magistrate Anurag Shrivastav was quoted by news agency PTI as saying.
"There are no casualties so far. Fire tenders have rescued the people inside the building," he was further quoted as saying.
The UP Cabinet secretary is on his way to Kanpur to assess the situation.
The fire, which broke out in the sixth floor of the building housing shops and offices, engulfed the entire floor in a short while with huge amounts of smoke billowing out.
A cinema hall, Heer Palace, close to the building, was evacuated as a precautionary measure and traffic diverted from the area to allow the fire brigade to carry out its rescue work.
Senior Superintendent of Police, Kanpur, Abhaya Kumar and other senior officials rushed to the spot to oversee the rescue operations.
