Kolkata: A fire broke out in Kolkata's Burrabazar on Tuesday morning just five months after another fire had gutted the Nandaram market.
The fire engulfed Mehta Building in the area after chemicals kept in the first floor of the building exploded.
No causalities have been reported. Firefighters brought the fire under control after about three hours.
CNN-IBN's Sukarno Sen reported that the fire broke out at about 1100 hrs IST. He added that despite Burrabazar being one of the largest wholesale markets in Asia, the state government has not been pro-active in taking precautionary measure to prevent fires.
Burrabazar is a crowded area with thousands of shops crammed along narrow lanes
Fire brigade officials said that 15 fire engines had been sent to fight the blaze.
A fire brigade official said, "We are not sure, but perhaps some people are trapped in the building."
On January 12 this year, a devastating fire had singed the Kasiram building, where the Nandaram market was located, destroying property worth nearly Rs 500 crore.
In the last five months, the city saw at least 12 big or small fires including the one in a departmental store at Sodepur in North 24-Parganas district that claimed 13 lives.
