London: With the economic downturn this year, lavish private parties, and expensive gifts are not so popular with Indians in Britain .

While the credit crunch may mean scaling down on the celebrations, it seems that the spirit of festival is soaring.

With the British economy on the brink of a recession, Indians in Britain are facing the brunt of the economic downturn.

Even Diwali seems to be relatively low key this year with most non-resident Indians (NRIs) scaling back on the festivities.

“Money has been hard to earn, pockets have been tight. It has definitely affected people. Every one spends Diwali in a manner they want but it be mostly at home, this time around,” said one.

Others have cut down on huge buys like jewelry and expensive dresses but will have the special cakes and other festivities.

For many others, it is just the spirit of festivity. They would rather share, enjoy and proceed with life.

“It will be the same. We will leave credit crisis behind and enjoy our Diwali,” said a reveler.

“We are not rich so the credit crisis makes no difference to us,” said another.

Credit crisis or not, the festival's spirit prevails.
