Click to play videoNew Delhi: A case has now been filed against Samajwadi Party leader, Abu Asim Azmi. It was filed almost simultaneously as the case against Raj Thackeray.
The police finally filed cases against the two for promoting enmity between groups in the wake of widespread accusations that they were going slow on the violence against North Indians in Mumbai, since last week.
Police sources have told CNN IBN that both could be arrested later this week after a complete security situation review.
“Police would be arresting Raj Thackeray and Abu Hashmi after completing all formalities,” said Jt Commissioner K L Prasad.
Refuting suggestions that the police have acted under pressure, Prasad insisted that they acted in a professional manner.
Both Thackeray and Azmi have been booked under sections of the IPC that deal with the offence of promoting enmity between groups on grounds of race, place of residence, language and the like.
“Section 144 has been issued against Raj Thackeray and Abu Hashmi. Under this section they should not address press conference or address rallies for the next seven days. If they do so they would be arrested,” he stated.
The two cases have been filed at the Vikhroli and Shivaji Park police stations. The Government filed the cases after scrutinising the speeches of the two leaders and with the Attorney General's nod.
“There is no politician for whom the law of the land can be overturned. If we are not able to handle the arrest, we will call upon the Army,” he promised.
Thackeray's Maharashtra Navnirman Sena has been targetting non-Maharashtrians, specifically migrants from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh with violence and intimidation. MNS workers had, throughout last week, beaten up migrant workers and taxi drivers on Mumbai's streets.
An FIR had been filed against Thackeray by Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh but the Mumbai Police were accused of going slow as barely two days after the FIR, Raj Thackeray had attended the police chief's daughter's wedding.

"I am very disgusted that this act of dual FIR is absolutely a sinister design to create Samajwadi Part the victim party with Raj Thackeray's party," he said.
