First Aid: First step to saving lives

New Delhi: Road accident deaths in India have risen from 81,000 to 98,000 in the last five years alone.

And most occurred because no emergency care was administered on the victims at the time of the accident. However, First Aid could have saved many of these lives.

“First aid is very important. If it is given timely then many lives can be saved. The aim is to transfer the patient to the hospital as fast as possible,” says HOD, Anesthesiology,ISRC, H K Mahajan.

Even if medical professionals are not present on the spot you can administer some emergency care that can go a long way in saving lives.

The Three Cardinal Points to be kept in mind are airways, breathing and circulation. And to administer first aid, the following have to be carried out:

  • It is most important to check the airway passage of the victim since lack of oxygen can be fatal. Breathing usually stops because the tongue falls and blocks the trachea's passage.
  • Remove all obstructions and give mouth-to-mouth ventilation. Inflated lungs indicate that oxygen has already reached.
  • If the victim is a biker, then special care must be taken to remove the helmet. Observe precaution when handling a victim of a spinal injury, which usually occurs in most accident cases.

“The patient must be transferred on a stretcher as one unit and after providing him with oxygen he should be transferred to the hospital,” says Mahajan.

Certain other important points must also be kept in mind when rendering first aid:

  • Remove dirt, glass or thorns from a open wound.
  • Incase of bleeding apply direct pressure on the wound by tying a clean cloth.
  • In case of an abdominal wound cover the injured part with a wet cloth to prevent drying of the organ as intestines may come out.
  • If a limb has been cut off put the limb in a polybag and place this in another bag of cold water. It maybe possible to reattach it to the body.

And lastly rush the victim to the nearest hospital as soon as possible because in such delicate cases time is the essence.
