Nashik: On September 8 2006, serial blasts just outside Bada Kabrastan in the communally sensitive town of Malegaon killed 37 and left more than 100 injured.

The incident had sent mixed signals both to the nation and the intelligence agencies.

But exactly one month and 21 days later the mystery behind Malegaon blasts has been solved with the arrest of the 25-year-old Noor-ul-hoodha, a SIMI activist.

"We had specific information that he is the planter of bomb in the blasts,” said DGP Maharashtra, Dr P S Pasricha.

Hoodha was already in police custody for a bomb hoax case. But it was during the course of interrogation that he confessed and spilled the beans on the actual conspirator, Shabir Ahmad Massiullah.

Shabbir Ahmad Massiullah Shabbir Batterywala was arrested by Mumbai Crime branch under Unlawful Activities prevention Act 1967 and is currently in judicial custody.

"We have moved the court to hand him over because he is the main conspirator and is the owner of the godown where Noor-ul-hooda was working,” Pasricha said.

The conspiracy of Malegaon blasts runs deep and wide but the police claims to be on the right track and is already confident of the third arrest, Raees Ansari.

"Yes Raees Ansari is the third to be arrested. He is also in police custody,” Pasricha said.

It’s worth remembering that local SIMI activists were used to execute the 7/11 bombings, so the big question here - is there any link of the involvement of a foreign agency in the Malegaon blasts as well? The ATS needs to figure out the answer to that during the course of investigation.
