Mumbai: Mani Ratnam's much-awaited “epic” Guru hit theatres on Friday, riding high on speculation and the pre-release buzz of being inspired by Reliance founder Dhirubhai Ambani’s life.
Adding to the hype were rumours of an impending marriage between the lead pair - Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai.
However, all publicity may not necessarily be good publicity. The movie failed to register a bumper box-office opening, at least in the opening hours of the first day.
Expectations are quite high and looking at the collections we have for the evening show, it should do good, say 70 to 75 per cent. But opening is a little slow,” said Vice President (Marketing), Mumbai’s Fun Republic cinema.
However, the first-day reactions tell a different tale. Youngsters are going gaga over Guru.
“It’s a super movie and the role was meant for Abhishek,” said one movie-goer.
“It’s a nice movie and different from the run-of-the-mill tales. It’s about how dreams of a man from a small town also get fulfilled,” said another.
“A R Rahman’s music score was too good and Abhishek rocked!” said another youngster.
Guru has opened with about 800 prints worldwide and trade pundits say the film will pick up during the weekend.
But if you are a die-hard Mani Ratnam fan or game for some plain good cinema, then this one is not to be missed.
