Five blasts rock Srinagar, 8 killed

Srinagar: A series of grenade attacks by terrorists in Srinagar killed at least eight people and wounded at least 32 on Tuesday.

In the first incident, terrorists lobbed a grenade into a minibus carrying tourists through Srinagar, killing five and wounding 14, said a senior police officer, Farooq Ahmad.

Among the dead were four women, he said. Three of the injured were in critical condition at hospitals in the city.

Blood stained the streets at the scene of the attack, which took place around noon, and shards of shattered glass and the debris of small, colourful souvenirs shattered by the explosion were scattered throughout the area.

"Someone threw a grenade on a Tempo Traveller with tourists from Bengal. This is a continuous low-intensity war; we are investigating the matter and we will nab them soon," said the Inspector General of CRPF.

Minutes later, another grenade explosion shook the busy Residency Road.

A grenade was lobbed at a Maruti car bearing a Haryana registration number. At least two people were injured in the incident.

There was heavy police deployment at the Residency Road, as a minister was to inaugurate a showroom. Police ruled out the possibility of the two attacks being related.

"One was at Dal Gate and the other is in a commercial hub. I don't think the two are related. The law and order situation in the state is under control," said Inspector General of Srinagar, S N Sahai.

The third attack took place near the Ghantaghar (Clock Tower) in Lal Chowk. Reports said one person died in the attack.

The fourth attack was reported near the Regal Chowk area on Tuesday. Three children were injured when a grenade was lobbed near a Santro car.

The fifth attack (at around 1350 hours IST) was at Batamaloo in which one person was injured. Then came a grenade attack (1530 hours IST) at the city’s Tourist Reception Centre in which six persons were injured.

Condemning the attack PDP leader, Mehbooba Mufti said, "This incident is very unfortunate. I have heard that people who were trying to help the injured were beaten by the police. Innocent people are being attacked in the Valley. The people have to stand up for the state."

Tuesday’s attacks came a week after Jammu and Kashmir police claimed to have busted a Hizbul Mujahideen and Al-Badr module responsible for earlier grenade and car bomb blasts in the Valley.

No terrorist organisation has claimed responsibility so far. This is for the second time that a series of grenade blasts took place in the Srinagar city this year. Seven blasts took place in April 14 this year in which about six people were killed and 50 injured.
