Press Trust Of India

Berhampur (Orissa): At least five persons were injured in a clash between two rival political groups in Polasara Assembly constituency of Orissa's Ganjam district, police said on Saturday.

Tension prevailed in the area following the clash between the supporters of the candidates of Congress and Biju Janata Dal (BJD) at Chirikipada Sasan on Friday night, police said.

The injured had been shifted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Behrampur and their condition was stated to be out of danger.

Adequate police personnel were deployed in the area where, police said, lethal weapons were used during clash.

The clash broke out during the campaigning of Congress candidate as BJD supporters were accused of preventing the entry of rival party workers into the area.

Former Orissa minister Ramakrushna Patnaik of Congress is crossing swords with sitting BJD MLA Niranjan Pradhan in newly-formed constituency.
