Howrah bomb box: 5 railway workers suspended

Kolkata: A day after an abandoned military ammunition box was found at the Howrah railway station, authorities on Wednesday suspended five railway employees for "not performing their duties properly".

The South-Eastern Railway authorities formed a committee to investigate the matter.

"After primary investigation, the committee found five railway employees, including two rail guards, did not perform their duties properly. They have been suspended," said railway spokesperson R N Mahapatra.

Mahapatra said the investigation revealed the box was mistakenly brought to Howrah from Maharashtra.

The guards and railway checkers should have spotted the box before the train departed to the Satragachi car shed of Howrah but they failed, he said.

Railway police officials on Tuesday evening spotted the green military ammunition box with the inscription "10 bombs, 51 mm" on it inside a deserted compartment of the Howrah-Bhadrak passenger train. The discovery led to panic spreading through the busy station.

However, defence spokesperson R K Das said the box only contained covers or inners of bombs. Officials from Kossipore Gun and Shell Factory took away the box later.
